At least seven early American car makers used the name Mercury before Ford introduced the Mercury line in its offerings for 1939. Some auto historians claim it took a number of years before Edsel Ford could convince his father Henry that the market niche between Ford cars and Lincolns should be exploited. Sharing the flathead V-8 with Fords in the beginning, the Mercury was seen as an upscale Ford for several years until Ford Motor Company reorganization produced the Lincoln-Mercury Division to change this perception.
